Concept of the International Project

The strategy of the international Project was offered by Professor John Bergeron at conference of Human Proteome Organisation’s representatives that had taken place on Barbados in 2008 and the conference initiated the Project. Besides  a principle of gene-centricity , program document – “White paper” were discussed during the meeting. The maintenance of this document is displayed on the scheme.  Three groups of methodical approaches underlie of project  performance:

  • mass spectrometric identification;
  • immunohistochemical mappingof the proteome;
  • analysis of protein-protein interactions in the context of system biology net-model.

Three driving forces of the Human Proteome Project are unified by the bioinformatic platform. Reproduced from «A Human Proteome Project Determining and characterizing the proteins encoded by the human genome.»

 Foreign projects

  1. HPDq — The project of quantitative identification of 21000 proteins
  2. ProteomeAltlas — The project of immunohistochemical analysis of proteins in proteome-scale

Cost of the Project (Anderson et al., MCP, 2009)

  • Creation value of the system for quantitative detection of 2 thousand proteins is estimated in 50 million US dollars;
  • Cost of such system for whole proteome (18 thousand fibers) is estimated more than 250 million US dollars.
Despite the fact that the document considered on Barbados conference carries strongly marked integrative character, it does not solve main limit of proteomics - low sensitivity of analytical techniques. The Russian contribution to the international project consists in development of identification methods of ultra- low abundant proteins by detection technologies of single molecules and their complexes.
